You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. 2 Corinthians 3:3
When God created the universe, God created a variety of animals with interesting characteristics. Who would have thought to create an animal with a long neck, or an animal that has black and white stripes? Then, there is the porcupine with its quills. These animals standout no matter where they are. Probably one of the most interesting creature is the chameleon…an animal that changes its color to fit into its environment. Because the chameleon changes color, it is able to blend into its surroundings and escape its predator. As I thought about the chameleon, I came to the conclusion that unfortunately, some Christians are like the chameleon. That is, they want to blend in and not stand out. The problem with this is that is becomes hard to tell the Christian from the non Christian. Being the same offers us protection…keeps one from being criticized, being teased for our beliefs, or persecuted on the job or at school for what we believe. The Christian lifestyle should set us apart making us different and pointing to God through our actions. When we blend into society rather than standout, we are not any different from the Israelites. God’s plan for the Israelites was to create a nation that was set apart and pointed to God. Unfortunately, when they conquered the land of Canaan, they chose not to stand out. They wanted to be like the people around them. They chose to have a human king rather than God as king. They began to practice the religions of the people around them. Because of their failure to standout, there were consequences…exile. We too may have consequences if we fail to be all that God is calling us to be as the people of God. What about the way in which you life your life? Is it a testimony to God, or is it the same as the culture around you? As Disciples of Christ we should be set apart and be different even if it means that we become visible. Today take time to evaluate your lifestyle…are you a chameleon or are you unique and visible? Prayer: Precious Lord, Thank you for your gift of salvation through Christ. Give me the courage to be unique and standout. Help me to live my life so that people will know that I belong to you. Amen |
